Robert A. Shafer

February 16, 1921 - February 20, 2010

Charlotteville (Schoharie County): Robert A. Shafer 89, of County Hwy 40, died following a brief illness on Saturday, February 20th at the Bassett Healthcare Facility in Cooperstown with his children by his side.

Robert was born February 16, 1921 in Summit, NY a son of Ashley K. and Marjorie E. (Kilmer) Shafer. A lifelong resident, he attended the Oliver school district. Mr. Shafer served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army as a truck driver, receiving an honorable discharge in 1945. He operated the family dairy farm, Maple Lane Farms for most of his life and assisted in the construction of the Summit Youth Camp.

He was a member of the Charlotteville Volunteer Fire Department, Schoharie County Fire Police, and the Charlotte Valley Game Association.

Robert was married to his wife of 68 years, Dorothy M. Shafer until her death on November 3, 2009.

Survivors include his five daughters, Gloria (Alton) Travis of Charlotteville, Patricia (Ronald) Sperbeck of Charlotteville, Sylvia (Phil) Trifaro of Latham, Sandra (James) Mickle of Summit, and Carol (Chris) Rifenbark of Charlotteville, four sons, Robert (Ida) Shafer, Jr., of Charlotteville, William (Mary Alice) Shafer of East Worcester, Richard (Roxanne) Shafer of Worcester and James (Mary Jane) Shafer of Charlotteville, 26 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, several cousins including Shirley Kane and Mildred Monthie, both of Central Bridge, along with one sister-in-law, Joyce Van Dyke of Schoharie. Robert was predeceased by his parents.

Calling hours will be held from 6-8 PM on Thursday, February 25th at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 108 Chapel Street, Cobleskill. A funeral service will be held at 1 PM on Friday, February 26th at the funeral home with burial at a later date in the Charlotteville Cemetery.
